Meet the 2014 Introduction to Journalism Camp teen reporters

On Monday, 15 teen writers from the Twin Cities gave up a chunk of their summer to become esteemed members of ThreeSixty Journalism’s 2014 Intro Camp. These wide-eyed students are spending three weeks learning how to interview and report the news while also rubbing shoulders with journalists and communications professionals.

Let’s meet these inquisitive young minds, shall we?

Lujain Al-Khawi

Favorite places/things to do in the Twin Cities: I enjoy everything — especially going to downtown Minneapolis.
If you could interview anyone (living) who would it be? Bradley Cooper, because I really admire his nice personality. Also, the interview would probably receive a lot of popularity.
What do you like about writing? When I get into the zone, I learn a lot about myself and the world around me. I am also able to connect certain aspects of my life, even if I am writing about something completely objective.
What issues are important to you? Politics, social life, diversity, education, government, science and history.
What is your ideal future career? Lawyer, published author
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Spain
What are your special talents? Art, computers
What do you do when you’re not at school or journalism camp? I’m involved in debate, National Honor Society and Link Crew.
What else do you think people should know about you? I like to talk a lot.

Estefany Arellano Garcia

What else do you think people should know about you? I’m a little shy when sharing and sometimes forget what I have to say.

Melissa Arellano Garcia

What do you like about writing? I want to get better at it, really enjoy it.
What is your ideal future career? Vet, because I care about animals. Or I could travel to a variety of places to get to know them better.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? France, because it’s a beautiful place.

What is your ideal future career? I want to be with my family and get a chance to travel

What are your special talents? I can sing.
What do you do when you’re not at school or journalism camp? Reading, singing and watching Netflix

If you could interview anyone (living) who would it be? I would like to interview my brother because of his humor. I feel comfortable doing anything in front of him. He doesn’t like to make me sad, but that also cannot stop him from telling me the truth about something wrong I did.
What do you like about writing? Writing allows me to express my feelings easily. When I write, I feel that I can say anything on paper without just complaining.
What issues are important to you? Judging people without knowing them, laughing at people to make them feel uncomfortable and being impolite toward people/being unfriendly.
What is your ideal future career? To have some function in the communications field.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Europe
What are your special talents? I learn things quickly.
What do you do when you’re not at school or journalism camp? Listen to music, talk and watch movies.
What else do you think people should know about you? I laugh and smile with anyone, but I cannot hide my feelings when I am upset. I like to spend time with people who want to be with me, but I hate forcing myself to be another person or forcing people to be my friend. I like to be myself. I like to help people — that makes me feel great.

Zekriah Chaudhry

What do you like about writing? I like being able to get my ideas out of my head.
What issues are important to you? NCAA regulations on paying student athletes.
What is your ideal future career? Sports journalist

What are your special talents? I am a second degree black belt in karate.
What do you do when you’re not at school or journalism camp? Studying football and other sports, as well as working out.

What do you like about writing? Everything! I love losing myself in my own words and also creating stories people enjoy reading.
What issues are important to you? Social justice, religion, politics, inequality in America and food.
What is your ideal future career? Editor/owner of my own magazine or newspaper, or perhaps a lawyer.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Paris
What are your special talents? I speak Arabic and I love arguing in a polite way.
