College Essay Boot Camps Launched

Roughly 48 hours after Engagement Coordinator Bao Vang and Program Manager Miles Trump spoke to Harding students about Boot Camp, the camp was full – and had a waiting list.

Every student in ThreeSixty Journalism will complete a college essay.

That vision is one way ThreeSixty will enhance students’ college readiness, access and success moving forward, and it begins this spring with ThreeSixty's College Essay Boot Camp, a pilot program that will be held at Minneapolis Roosevelt and St. Paul Harding high schools over the schools’ spring breaks.

ThreeSixty’s College Essay Boot Camp is a five-day writing workshop that will instruct an estimated 50 students at Harding and Roosevelt – the vast majority are College Possible and/or AVID students – how to complete an adaptable, personal essay that can be used for college and scholarship applications. Each student will work directly with a writing professional, many of whom are current and former journalists.

“I’m excited about the College Essay Boot Camp,” Roosevelt Principal Michael Bradley said, “because it will provide students with the space, the time and the resources to focus on their futures and to engage in an essay and in a college-planning process that they may not be afforded otherwise.”

College Essay Boot Camp is modeled after an eight-week personal narrative writing program, which was funded by the St. Paul Foundation, that ThreeSixty held last year in St. Paul Harding and Johnson high schools.

And there's demand for it. Roughly 48 hours after Engagement Coordinator Bao Vang and Program Manager Miles Trump spoke to Harding students about Boot Camp, the camp was full – and had a waiting list.

College Essay Boot Camp will run from March 28 to April 1 at Minneapolis Roosevelt and will be held April 4-8 at St. Paul Harding. As part of each camp, the final day will be held at the University of St. Thomas, where students will receive a taste of college life and partake in a celebration of their work.

At ThreeSixty, we believe all of our students have a story to tell. Through College Essay Boot Camp, students will learn how to write that story to enhance their college readiness and access opportunities.
